BRANCH MEMBERSHIP
What We Are
Legion Branches operate autonomously, guided by Legion by-laws. This decentralized structure allows them to tailor their policies and activities to the specific needs of local Veterans and communities. By engaging their membership in decision-making, Legion Branches ensure a responsive and locally-driven approach. This autonomy, anchored in a common set of guidelines, promotes unity in purpose while respecting the diverse challenges faced by Veterans in different regions.
Types of Membership
The Royal Canadian Legion's recent decision to open membership to all underscores a commitment to inclusive and community engagement, featuring three membership types: Ordinary, Associate, and Affiliate.
Ordinary Members: These are individuals who are or were veterans, having served in the Canadian Armed Forces. This category recognizes and honours their direct contributions to national defence, fostering a sense of unity among those with military service experience.
Associate Members: This category welcomes individuals with a direct family member who was a veteran, fostering a sense of community and support among those with a familial connection to the military.
Affiliate Members: Individuals without a military background or direct connection to a veteran. This category broadens participation to those who bring diverse perspectives and experiences, promoting a more inclusive Legion community.
This diverse membership structure enriches the Legion's perspective and resources, emphasizing its role beyond military experiences. By embracing individuals from various backgrounds, the Legion becomes a dynamic force for positive change within the wider Canadian community. The inclusive approach not only honours veterans but also acknowledges the interconnections of diverse communities in building a resilient society.

The Ladies Auxiliary Crest
Membership is a cornerstone of the Royal Canadian Legion, playing a pivotal role in upholding the organization's mission and values. The Royal Canadian Legion, a renowned veterans' organization, relies on its members to preserve the memory of those who served and sacrificed for our country, as well as to support veterans and their families.
One key reason why membership is crucial for the Royal Canadian Legion is that it fosters a sense of camaraderie and solidarity among individuals who share a common bond of military service. Veterans, serving military members, and their families come together under the Legion's banner to connect with others who understand the unique challenges and experiences associated with military life. This shared understanding creates a supportive community where members can find empathy, encouragement, and a sense of belonging.
Membership in the Royal Canadian Legion also provides a platform for individuals to actively contribute to the well-being of veterans and their families. Through various programs and initiatives, Legion members can participate in advocacy efforts, community outreach, and fundraising activities to address the needs of veterans and promote their welfare. This collective effort amplifies the Legion's impact and reinforces its commitment to serving those who have served their country.
Additionally, the Legion relies on its membership base to preserve the historical significance of military service in Canada. By actively engaging with the community, organizing commemorative events, and participating in educational initiatives, Legion members play a vital role in ensuring that the sacrifices of veterans are remembered and honored for generations to come.
Membership in the Royal Canadian Legion is not just about joining an organization; it's about becoming part of a legacy, a network, and a force for positive change. The shared commitment to remembrance, advocacy, and community service binds members together in a common purpose, making their collective impact greater than the sum of its parts. In essence, membership in the Royal Canadian Legion is a testament to the enduring spirit of service and sacrifice, as well as a tangible expression of gratitude towards those who have dedicated their lives to protecting our freedom and democracy.
